Stone carving, masonry and letter cutting courses in the UK taught by professionally qualified Stone Mason, Ayley Fridlington.

Ayley is a former Lincoln Cathedral Stonemason with 23 years of experience in architectural stonework and carving. She served her apprenticeship at the cathedral and is a holder of a distinction in Advanced City & Guilds Stone Masonry, the highest designation obtainable.

The current course dates are listed on three pages with the number of places available for each course accurate and up to date at all times.

Stone carving courses are based on the creation of gargoyles and grotesques and teach clients of all abilities the important processes involved in the successful creation of these fun and sometimes scary stone creatures. The duration of the carving courses is 3 days during which time you will produce and take home with you an excellent piece of carving to be proud of.

Stone masonry courses are based on the production of a classical ovolo mould complete with internal and external mitres, the processes involved being fundamental in the production of all architectural stonework. Whether you're looking to enter the trade as a Stonemason, expand your knowledge of working with stone, involved or interested in restoration and conservation, or perhaps own a stone property in need of maintenance, this course is the ideal place to begin. As with the carving courses, the masonry courses are run over 3 days and during this time you will produce and take home with you an excellent example of architectural stonework demonstrating the skills you have learnt.

The letter cutting courses are based around the processes involved in the application of letter cutting in stone using both classical and contemporary letter forms. The duration of the courses is 3 days during which time those attending will learn the techniques involved in the setting out and cutting of a stone inscription.

Gift certificates are also available and make ideal gifts for birthdays and special occasions - or why not just treat yourself!

Client Feedback

Just to say a huge thankyou for the course this week. It was fantastic to get an insight into the art of lettercutting. You were incredibly patient and gave just the right amount of guidance. It was also excellent to be able to watch you at work...

Trina, Edinburgh

The course was fantastic.

I thought that it was pitched at just the right level and I loved the fact that we got stuck straight within minutes of starting. The Ovolo was a great thing to make and mine takes pride-of-place in my room. What I liked most was that I was able to achieve so much in those few days- I never imagined that I would be able to produce something as impressive as I did.

Hope you are both well and thanks for all the tea and biscuits!

Al, West Sussex

Just a quick note to say thanks for the Intro to Stonemasonry course. Really enjoyed it and learned a lot from it. I am now going to buy myself some tools and keep practicing with a view to a change of career.
