A very popular 3 day professionally taught stone masonry course designed to teach students of all abilities the processes involved in the production of architectural stonework. Whether you're looking to enter the trade as a Stonemason, expand your knowledge of working with stone, involved or interested in restoration and conservation, or perhaps own a stone property in need of maintenance, this course is the ideal place to begin.

The course is based on the production of a classical ovolo mould complete with internal and external mitres, the processes involved being fundamental in the production of all architectural stonework. The ovolo mould can be found in many guises in both historic and modern architecture from classical columns to the basis of egg and dart ornamentation. Throughout the course the following areas are addressed:

Selection of suitable stone including identification of defects.
Correct selection, use and sharpening of tools.
Working true flat surfaces without twist from rough blocks.
Marking out of templates.
Correct methods of working mouldings.
Marking out of internal and external mitres.
Finishes.

The stone used for the stone masonry courses is Lincoln limestone, a creamy white sedimentary stone rich in aquatic fossils and easy to work. The same stone was used for the construction of Lincoln Cathedral and more recently, it's ongoing repair.

Upon completion of the course students will take home with them an excellent example of stonework demonstrating their understanding of the processes involved in its production.

Everyone who has attended my stone masonry courses has achieved excellent results and taken away with them fantastic pieces of work – testimony to the professional level of instruction I give throughout the course.

Refreshment breaks during the course are taken on an ad hoc basis with tea, coffee and biscuits in plentiful supply.

Please note this course runs from 10am to 3pm daily.

Accommodation

The cost of the course doesn't include accommodation. However, there are a large number of Bed & Breakfast establishments in and around Lincoln. Location

The courses are held in Lincoln, Lincolnshire at our purpose-built workshop premises within The Terrace situated in the heart of Lincoln's Cultural Quarter - the ideal venue for artistic inspiration being near to the Theatre Royal, Lincoln Drill Hall, The Central Library, The Collection Art and Archaeology in Lincolnshire, The Usher Art Gallery and historic Lincoln Cathedral. Health And Safety

Please be aware that all students attending courses are expected to provide their own safety footwear. Safety glasses are provided and are to be worn at all times. Each course will commence with a Health and Safety briefing.

Cost

The cost of the course is £190 if paid in full at the time of booking.

Alternatively you can pay a deposit of £100 now and a balance of £105 payable before Sunday September 26th, 2010 (total of £205). Please note that paying in full will save you £15 compared to paying a deposit plus balance.

Cancellations and Alterations

The stated price of all courses offered on this website are inclusive of a non refundable £100 deposit. Should you wish to cancel for any reason you will be refunded any money you have paid minus £100.

If you have booked a place on a course but are unable to attend then you can transfer to another course on a different date providing there is an available place. If the course you transfer to differs in price then you will be debited or credited accordingly. Please give at least three weeks notice before your original course start date if you need to transfer.
